Design & Technology

"Achieving Together in God's Love"

Intent

As a School of Opportunity, through Design and Technology at Our Lady of Victories, pupils are encouraged to become independent, creative problem-solvers and thinkers as individuals and as part of a team. The iterative design process (design, make, evaluate) is fundamental and runs throughout the teaching in all year groups. This process encourages children to identify real and relevant problems, evaluate existing products and then take risks and innovate when designing and creating solutions using skills from across the curriculum.  Pupils will be taught to use tools correctly and safely, embedding previous learning and refining skills. The pupils use a range of practical and technical expertise, allowing specific time to practice these skills and are then encouraged to think critically, evaluating their own work and that of others in order to learn and reflect on their experiences.

As a School of Creativity Our Lady of Victories pupils will learn about cooking, food and nutrition, ensuring that they acquire the fundamental life skills in order to be able to feed themselves healthily and independently, whilst learning about where food comes from, therefore making connections with their geographical and scientific knowledge.

As a School of Confidence it is our aim at Our Lady of Victories  to equip our pupils with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the Design and Technology National Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

As a School of Love and Opportunity, we believe that all learning should be adapted to the needs of all children (SEN, EAL, more able, disadvantaged) and that the curriculum should be carefully planned to take account of everyone in the class so that all can succeed.

Implementation

Children design products with a purpose in mind and an intended user of the products. Food technology is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a varied and healthy diet and how to prepare this.

Design and technology is a crucial part of school life and learning and it is for this reason that as a school we are dedicated to the teaching and delivery of a high quality Design and Technology curriculum; through well planned and resourced projects and experiences.

Design and Technology also embeds our Mission Statement. It is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject, requiring creativity, resourcefulness, and imagination. Pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. It is very cross - curricular and draws upon subject knowledge and skills within Mathematics, Science, History, Computing and Art. Children learn to take risks, be reflective, innovative, enterprising and resilient. Through the evaluation of past and present technology they can reflect upon the impact of Design Technology on everyday life and the wider world.

Impact

Assessment of children's learning in Design Technology is an ongoing monitoring of children's understanding, knowledge and skills by the class teacher, throughout lessons and by checkpoint challenges. This assessment is then used to inform differentiation, support and challenge required by the children.

A summative judgement is made by the teacher at the end of the year.

Design Technology is also monitored by the subject leader throughout the year in the form of book monitoring, looking at outcomes and pupil interviews to discuss their learning and understanding and establish the impact of the teaching taking place.
