Year 5 Spring Newsletter

This term,  Year 5’s topic is The Victorians.

In English, we will be predicting, creating and writing about our own Grotlyn, based upon the book by Benji Davies. We will also be researching a variety of aspects about the Victorians in order to write a biography about Queen Victoria and a non- chronological report about Victorian life, jobs and schools etc.

In Maths, we are revisiting place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as fractions and geometry.

In Science, we will be looking at forces as well as dinosaurs after the half term break.

In RE, we are looking at inspirational people and asking what makes people inspirational and can anyone be a follower of Jesus? Next half term,  our focus will be Reconciliation.

As part of our topic, we will be creating art work based on artists from the Victorian era, particularly L.S. Lowry and William Morris. We will also be looking at the geography of the area and comparing it to how it was back and comparing Victorian life to our own.

In terms of trips this term, year 5 will be visiting Abbey House in Leeds for a Victorian Workshop as well as having a visitor in to talk to the children about the Bradford Poisoning’s. Both of these have been included to help with the children’s scientific inquiry and debating skills.

Film:
As part of our film, the children have been writing their own scripts for The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo. This term, the children will be finishing their scripts, auditioning, creating props and costumes as well as starting to film, something they are very enthusiastic about and looking forwards to showing parents upon completion.

Things you could do at home:
English:
Please read with your child as regularly as possible (at least 3 times a week) and ask questions to check for understanding of the book and meaning of words.

Additionally, any work can be done at home for family points.

Please ensure your child has their full P.E kit in school and brings their swimming kit for swimming, including a towel.

P.E is on a Friday and swimming is on a Wednesday.
