Sex and Relationships Education Policy as part of Our Lady of Victories PHSE Policy Opening Statement This policy provides a coherent programme for the whole school including our foundation stage children, which will be integrated as part of the curriculum relating to Personal, Social and Emotional development. It will incorporate other areas of the curriculum such as Religious Education, Literacy and Science. It is important that we teach our children the correct names for the different parts of their bodies and as they develop, explain the facts about the changes that will take place within their bodies as they mature into young adults. It is essential that they be taught how to deal with the variety of emotions they will experience, learn how to form different relationships with a range of people including family members, friends and other adults, as well as developing appropriate strategies to deal with conflict within those relationships. Our teaching will be based on accurate information and Christian values reflecting the importance we firmly place on family life. It will nourish the values we place on respect for the individual and foster tolerance towards other cultures and their way of life, preparing and encouraging our children to become responsible adults in our multi-cultural society. The curriculum will begin at the very beginning of your childs school life here at Our Lady of Victories and will involve all school staff in one way or another. It will progressively spiral as they mature, extending their factual knowledge and through discussion widening their understanding. Within this programme we want to work very closely in partnership with parents, us helping you and you helping us to encourage all our children to adopt healthy and safe life styles. Aims Our aims are clearly set out in our PHSE policy but in addition to those aims: this section of the policy is to clarify the provision of sex and relationships education to all pupils and the teaching of human growth and reproduction based on the values and teachings of our Christian beliefs along with our science curriculum as set out in the National Curriculum. provide an education programme tailored to the age, physical and emotional maturity of the children provide a place of learning where children feel safe, happy and able to express themselves (in an appropriate way) to the people around them with the support of parents, we aim to encourage our children to adopt healthy and safe life styles develop confident individuals who can mature into self assured, tolerant and respected adults able to make value judgements The Curriculum Each year group will have a set curriculum for their particular year group, recommended by the Diocese and Education Bradford. As the children reach Y5 & Y6 it will include more specific knowledge about changes in their bodies and the onset of puberty. Outside agencies will be involved at this stage and parents will be informed about any sensitive teaching that will be taking place. The programme of study will focus on Life Processes and Living Things as laid down in the National Science Curriculum. This states that children, by the end of Ks 2 Y6, should be taught about life processes common to humans including growth and reproduction and the main stages of the human life cycle. Our work in this area will not exceed what is directed; therefore parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from this aspect of the National Science Curriculum. *Skills to be developed will be, listening, expressing feelings, asking for and accessing help. *Increased knowledge and understanding of physical and emotional development, both with themselves and their peers. Development of mutual and self-respect of ourselves, the opposite sex and a widening tolerance of other peoples cultures. *The staff will be given support when needed by the PHSE advisors and school health visitor. Appropriate training will take place as necessary. How the curriculum will be delivered Each year group will have a set curriculum for their particular year group, recommended by the Diocese and Education Bradford, which will be planned for and taught by the class teacher. Parents may be invited to take part in particular session as the children move through the school. Advice and Confidentiality issues Children often wish to speak confidentially to staff. We will uphold that confidentiality but where a child discloses a real cause for concern that may include a Child Protection issue the member of staff will: Tell the child that they cannot keep that confidentiality discuss these concerns with the Headteacher The Headteacher will in most cases discuss the issues with the childs parents/carers. However where it is assessed that a child may be in immediate danger and the childs safety would be placed further at risk if parents/carers were informed, the Headteacher will take appropriate action as specified by The Childrens Act 1989. In Y5 & Y6 as the curriculum becomes more specific to the onset of puberty outside agencies will be involved in the teaching of the curriculum. These outside agencies will include: PHSE advisory teachers from Education Bradford Health visitor and school nurse trained in the delivery of PHSE within the school environment. The use of Television and video programmes will be used as a teaching aid. These are available on request if you would like to view them. These materials have been fully vetted by Education Bradford. Evening meetings will be arranged for parents to view resources and discuss the curriculum. Special meetings may be arranged on request for mothers and daughters at which guest speakers will be invited. Monitoring and Evaluation This policy will be monitored and evaluated from childrens work and through classroom discussions, as well as the feeling of security and well being within the whole school environment. Equal Opportunities All children will have access to the PHSE curriculum regardless of Special Educational Needs, gender, race or religion. This policy will be reviewed biannually.
