We seek through Catholic education to enable every individual to develop their unique potential within a wider and changing society. Our Anti-bullying policy is an integral part of our Positive Behaviour Policy. At Our Lady of Victories we consider bullying to be very serious behaviour and always take firm action against it. Sometimes it is difficult to establish the difference between real bullying and boisterous or bossy behaviour. * Please recognise that there is a difference between Bullying and other Bossy or Boisterous conduct. We continually encourage the children to report all incidences of Bullying and to work to eliminate it. Bullying Bullying is action taken by one or more children with the deliberate intention of hurting another child, either physically, verbal or emotionally. In our experience Bullying includes * ganging up *taunting *isolating individuals *calling you or your family names *threats *creating an atmosphere *mental bullying *ridicule *frightening people * damaging someones property *racism *forcing someone to do something against their will *picking on people because of their physical attributes *peer pressure *sarcasm It can be: - persistent cause distress something you cannot escape damaging scary Bullying can be: words or actions that deliberately and persistently make someone else feel frightened, hurt, unhappy, upset or alone Bullying is : powerful cruel nasty hurtful mean WRONG 2 Aims To provide a whole school ethos in which individuals are valued and equal. To provide an environment which is safe and secure. To lead through example To involve staff, parents, governors and pupils as a positive resource to counter bullying To provide support for the bullied To raise childrens self-esteem and assertiveness. Help the bullies to change their behaviour. To make it clear that bullying is unacceptable and has established consequences. To manage the time and environment of the school so as to minimise opportunities for bullying. That all Governors, staff, parents and children are aware of the policy and what their respective roles and responsibilities are. We will help prevent bullying in three major ways, by: a) Having a policy framework to deal with bullying, which has taken into account the views of school staff, parents, governors, outside agencies and the children themselves. b) Making sure areas of the school where bullying seems likely to occur, such as the playground, toilets, cloakrooms and at times of the day when incidents are more likely to arise, such as lunchtimes, are carefully supervised. c) A curriculum where positive relationships amongst the children are embedded with key strategies that enables the children and adults to deal effectively with bullying. As a school we encourage everyone to: identify incidents of bullying and express their emotions about it, understand and respect other peoples needs, talk about good and bad relationships and about trust, develop skills: listening, cooperation, sharing negotiation, dealing with conflict, build self-esteem, confidence and assertiveness, identify trusted adults to share concerns with. The role of governors The governing body supports the Headteacher in all attempts to eliminate bullying from our school. This policy statement makes it very clear that the governing body does not allow bullying to take place in our school, and that any incidents of bullying that do occur are taken very seriously and dealt with appropriately. The governing body monitors the incidents of bullying that occur, and reviews the effectiveness of the school policy regularly. The governors require the Headteacher to keep accurate records of all incidents of bullying and to report to the governors on request about the effectiveness of school anti-bullying strategies. The governing body responds within ten days to any request from a parent to investigate incidents of bullying. In all cases, the governing body notifies the Headteacher and asks him/her to conduct an investigation into the case and to report back to a representative of the governing body. The role of the Headteacher It is the responsibility of the Headteacher to implement the school anti-bullying strategy and to ensure that all staff are aware of the school policy and know how to deal with incidents of bullying. The Headteacher reports to the governing body about the effectiveness of the anti-bullying policy on request. The Headteacher ensures that all children know that bullying is wrong, and that it is unacceptable behaviour in this school. The Headteacher draws the attention of children to this fact at suitable moments. For example, if an incident occurs, the Headteacher may decide to use assembly as a forum in which to discuss with other children why this behaviour was wrong, and why a pupil is being punished. The Headteacher ensures that all staff receives sufficient training to be equipped to deal with all incidents of bullying. The Headteacher sets the school climate of mutual support and praise for success, so making bullying less likely. When children feel they are important and belong to a friendly and welcoming school, bullying is far less likely to be part of their behaviour. The role of the school staff Staff in our school take all forms of bullying seriously, and intervene to prevent incidents from taking place. They keep their own records of all incidents that happen in their class and that they are aware of in the school. If staff witness an act of bullying, they do all they can to support the child who is being bullied. If a child is being bullied over a period of time, then, after consultation with the Headteacher, the staff member informs the childs parents. They keep an incident book in the office where we record all incidents that occur outside lesson time or on the childrens journey too and from school. If any adult witnesses an act of bullying, they should have the incident recorded in the incident book. If any member of staff become aware of bullying taking place, they must deal with the issue immediately, following procedure outlined above. This may involve counselling and support for the victim of the bullying, and punishment for the child who has carried out the bullying. Time is spent talking to the child who has bullied explaining why the action of the child was wrong, and endeavouring to help the child change their behaviour in future. If a child is involved in bullying other children, the Headteacher, the special needs co-ordinator and the Learning Mentor will all be fully informed. The childs parents will be invited into school to discuss the situation. In more extreme cases, for example where these initial discussions have proven ineffective, the Headteacher may contact external support agencies such as the social services. Staff routinely attends training, which enables them to become equipped to deal with incidents of bullying and behaviour management. Staff attempt to support all children in their class and to establish a climate of trust and respect for all. By praising, rewarding and celebrating the success of all children, we aim to prevent incidents of bullying. The role of parents Parents, who are concerned that their child might be being bullied, or who suspect that their child may be the perpetrator of bullying, should contact their childs class teacher immediately. It may be difficult to accept that your child is involved in bullying, but it is in your childs best interest to receive the help and guidance they may need. The co-operation of the parent is vital in resolving such incidences. Parents have a responsibility to support the schools anti-bullying policy and to actively encourage their child to be a positive member of the school. Monitoring and review The Learning mentor will monitor the incident book on a weekly basis and highlight any incidents that she may feel could be bullying related. Once each term, preferably the week before the end of term the Learning Mentor will meet with parents from the Parents Anti-Bullying Committee and analyse the information with regard to gender, age and ethnic background. They will then present a written report to the Parent Governor who will report back to the Governing Body This anti-bullying policy is the governors responsibility and they review its effectiveness bi-annually. Signed: Chair of Governors Date: MANAGING BULLYING: A GUIDE FOR PARENTS If you find that your child is involved in bullying others you will probably feel very worried, angry and upset.
